Law and Society Internship Program 2004-2005

The internship program consists of participating in field research for students who seek greater understanding and exposure to the legal system and law-related fields through participant observation as an intern. Students from all majors are welcome to apply. Students may research and secure their own internship positions after consultation with a student advisor and professor, or allow themselves to be placed by the internship coordinator in an internship related to their interests. Interns will commit to a minimum of 60 hours per quarter (6 hours per week). Interested students must have upper class standing and have a cumulative GPA of 2.8, or 3.0 for the three prior consecutive quarters (not including Summer Sessions), have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 for judicial internships, and possess proficient computer typing skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Word (or Word Perfect). At the student’s election, he/she may earn from 1 to 8 units, depending on the number of hours worked per week. Opportunities will be available for local, regional, and national internships, with guidance to appropriate agencies/advisors and websites to secure such internships. Some internships require a 2 quarter commitment. This five-session, two hour per session seminar focuses on the bridge between academic theory and professional reality, with an emphasis on expectations of law school and necessary adjustments students need to make to succeed, legal ethics, critical thinking about the legal system in practice, work culture and power issues. Paper length will be a maximum of five pages.

Please contact Ms. Robin Unander at unander AT lawso.ucsb.edu if you have questions about this course.
